waterlines - Elodie Laügt
waterlines is an invitation to follow penelope as one wait ends and another begins, in renewed invention. She paints rather than weaves, and distances shift as a result. Each of the poems in this precise collection measures these transformations and displacements.
Laügt’s delicately forensic attention is cerebral and sensuously embodied as she interrogates the moves we make to make sense of things: starting again and again, rewriting the rules. These are poems drenched in colour and in full command of their own fluidity, oscillating between microcosm and macrocosm (not the swimmer’s foot but the pull of the water) to refresh the soul. Turns of phrase so finely tooled they take your breath away and return it, changed. Presenting us with the purest hard-earned joy at stepping back to see what we might have made, waterlines is exquisite ekphrasis of the human spirit.

These poems are beautifully, delicately balanced: fluid, light, with a perfectly pitched humour and an ability to make even ‘forbearance’ strange. This is an assured, seriously playful voice.
